Is there someone in your class or neighbourhood that is always picking on you, taking your things rudely, making fun of you or hitting you? Then, he or she might just be a bully.
Bullies are people who think being cruel to others is fun; they do unkind things to others just because they think they can. It’s always terrible when bullies pick on you; they make you feel bad and sad. Let me tell you a bit about my experience and also help suggest how to deal with this bully trouble:
In my class there was a boy who would always make fun of me shouting my name Nise, Nise!!! Making fun of my name, I am 12 years old and just had my first taste of bullying. He would always do this in front of people and laugh at me for no reason at all. I would walk away while he is doing this and would not say anything but I would be sad and go and cry in a corner. I knew this definitely had to stop.
One day, in class before the teacher came in he started calling my name in all sorts of ways and laughing at me. Suddenly, I turned back and shouted, “Charlie, keep quiet no one wants to hear you talk!” There was a deafening silence after that and I wished I had a camera to take the picture of the look on his face. It was so funny. I had to stop myself from laughing. He kept quiet and sat down. My classmates began to shout altogether. Nise! Nise! Well done!
Now this chanting I must confess I liked. That was the end to Charlie bullying me. So what are the tips I have learnt to overcome bullying?
Don’t cry for bullies
When you cry for bullies you make them feel powerful, and they are not powerful. Bullies are really cowards, who pick on those they feel they are stronger than. The more you cry, the more you tell them they are stronger than you, and the more they pick on you.
Tell your parents about anyone picking on you. If it happens in school, then report to your teacher too. Don’t keep it to yourself. Bullies would always have someone they fear that you can report them to.
Don’t fight, but don’t cower.
It is never right to fight, so don’t fight. Instead of fighting, tell the bully to stop whatever it is he or she is doing to you. Be bold and speak up for yourself. Remember, bullies are just cowards acting strong; when you begin to speak up for yourself they will know you are not afraid of them.
After speaking up, walk away. Don’t just stand there and allow the bully to keep hurting you. You don’t have to stay where anyone is hurting you.
Avoid or ignore.
Stay away from bullies when you can. You can ask for your seat to be changed in class. Don’t go where they will be, if you don’t have to be there. Also, don’t pay attention to them; act as if you can hear what they are saying. By not paying attention to them, you are showing them that you don’t care, which will make them get tired of bothering you.
Don’t be a bully too; always treat people nicely. Remember the Golden Rule in the bible that says- “Do for others what you would want them to do for you” (Matthew 7:12).
Accidents can happen, anywhere and anytime: in the school playground, on the sports field or even at home. How do you know what to do if your friend or little brother gets hurt? How can you avoid some of these accidents? These tips will help you know what to do if this happens.
1. CALL FOR HELP
This is one of the most important things you can learn to do. If somebody is seriously hurt then you should ask an adult for help straightaway. If there is no adult around, call your parents immediately. Make sure you memorise the phone numbers of your mom and dad. Always ask for help before attempting any first aid yourself.
2. WHAT TO DO IF SOMEONE HAS A BROKEN BONE
How do you know if somebody’s bone is broken? If someone has hurt a limb and finds it painful to move, treat it as if it is broken. The most important thing to know about broken bones is that they should not be moved or touched. This is because it can lead to further injury. Try to keep the injured person as still as possible or find something soft, such as a folded cloth or cushion, on which they can rest the injured part of their body until help arrives.
3. WHAT TO DO WHEN SOMEONE IS BLEEDING
If a you or a friend falls and cut your skin, try washing the wound with water. You can put the injured part of your body it under a running tap – and try to get any dirt out to avoid infection from germs. Then you can cover the wound with a clean cloth until help arrives. If the injury is more serious, press hard on the wound with your hand to stop the bleeding. Cover the wounded area with a clean cloth or tissue paper before pressing to stop the bleeding. If there is an object stuck in the wound that is causing the bleeding, leave it there – pulling it out could make things worse. Do not touch this object or press on it.
4. WHAT TO DO WHEN SOMEONE IS BURNED
Did your friend or someone else touch a hot iron or pot in the kitchen? Put the burned area under cold running water and leave it for 20 minutes. The water should be running gently, not turned on to full. If there is no tap nearby, put cool wet cloths on the area but don’t let them dry out. The injured person may need a blanket to keep the rest of their body warm.
5. WATER SAFETY
Keep the life jackets on and make sure you don’t swim alone. Make sure your teacher, parents, or other adults are around before going into a swimming pool. Also, do not eat 30 minutes before swimming because you might pull a muscle. If you have a swimming pool at home, watch out for your little ones so they don’t go in when mom or dad aren’t around.
Yippee! You’re happy your exams are over, right? It’s time for fun, fun and more fun. Enjoy the holiday as well as you can. Before you know it, it will be time to go back to school and you will be in a new class. You will have to learn new things and do well in your tests and examinations. Exams can be fun if you learn to study the right way.
If you want to do really well in your test and exams, below are some things you must do:
Don’t wait till your exam or test is close before you start reading your books.
Listen well in class. Don’t play or sleep when you are being taught in class. Pay attention to your teacher.
Always do your homework and projects because they will add to your total score.
When you don’t understand anything, always ask for help from your teacher, parents or friends.
Prepare a study time table, that is, a time table for reading your books. Pick the subjects you will read each day. Make sure you follow your time table.
Don’t study where you can’t concentrate. If the noise from the TV is disturbing you, go to your room or anywhere that is quiet.
Never aim for a B or C grade in any subject; aim for an A, so that you can work towards it. If you don’t expect to get a good grade, then you might not get it because you will not work as hard as you should.
If you find it difficult reading alone, you can study with your friends.
Don’t be afraid before an exam, you might forget what you have read when you are scared.
Most importantly, always do your best and hope for the best.
Did you know that there are over 400 million dogs in the world? Wow! Animals are a part of our world, whether we like them or not, and learning about them helps us know more about our world.
Let’s test how well you know about our world. Tick the boxes below if you know the facts in front of them:
Horses and cows can sleep while standing up.
Sharks lay the biggest eggs in the world.
Even when a snake has its eyes closed, it can still see through its eyelids.
A housefly only lives for 2 or 3 weeks.
Sheep have four stomachs; each one helps them digest the food they eat.
It’s only the female mosquito that actually bites humans.
Mosquitoes are more attracted to the colour blue than any other colour.
Mosquitoes prefer biting people with smelly feet- so; make sure your feet are clean always.
A snail can sleep for 3 years.
Dolphins sleep with one half of the brain at a time, and with one eye closed.
The hummingbird is the only bird that can fly backwards.
Butterflies can only see the colours red, green and yellow; but red looks like black to them.
Don’t try this at home, but a snail can grow back a new eye if it loses one.
A bee must visit 4,000 flowers in order to make one tablespoon of honey.
Bees have five eyes. There are 3 small eyes on the top of a bee’s head and 2 larger ones in front.
Ostriches can run faster than horses, and the male ostriches can roar like lions.
A hippopotamus can run faster than a man.
The cockroach is the fastest animal on 6 legs.
A cockroach can survive for about a week without its head before dying of hunger.
Rabbits and parrots can see behind them without turning their heads. They are the only two animals that can do so.
As Sabrina and her friends saw Suzie coming, they started whispering and giggling. Suzie acted as if she didn’t see them and quietly went to her seat. Johnny, her seat mate, was already seated and he had this wicked grin on his face. “Suzie, Suzie, the slow girl is here,” he said out loud for everyone to hear, and the whole class started laughing. Still Suzie said nothing. She brought out her English book for the next class.
Ms. Wright, their English teacher, came into class that morning looking very bright and happy. She told the class she had a special gift for whoever comes first in the spelling competition they were about to do. She would be calling them one after the other to spell a word, anyone who does not spell the word he or she is given correctly will no longer take part in the competition. She started from the first row.
“Daniel, spell ‘Automatic’,” she said.
“A U T O…M…A….T I C,” Daniel spelled.
“Very good Daniel” Ms. Wright said, a very big smile on her face as she asked the class to clap for Daniel.
Soon enough, it was Suzie’s turn and her heart was beating loudly in a chest.
“Suzie, spell ‘Beautiful’,” Ms. Wright said.
“B E…” Suzie whispered.
“Speak up Suzie. Is your tongue stuck in your mouth?” Ms. Wright said, even as her classmate giggled quietly.
“B E U T….” Suzie continued.
“No, stop Suzie. You are wrong. Don’t tell me you can’t spell ‘Beautiful’. I don’t understand you. Just sit down please.” Ms. Wright said, quite upset, the smile on her face gone.
Suzie could not take it anymore, she began to cry. “Nobody likes me, everybody hates me,” she thought to herself.
Have you ever felt like this? Do you sometimes or often feel like nobody likes you? If yes, then put a smile on your face because you are about to learn how to do away with this bad feeling.
Let’s start with this exercise.
Write 5 things you think you are
Ok, you’re done! So, what did you write about- good or bad things? Do you know why this exercise is important? Here’s the reason- It is who you think or feel you are that you are. The bible says in Proverbs 23:7- “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” This means that it is what you think you are that you are. If you think people don’t like you; then they might not like you. It is important that you ‘think good’ and ‘feel good’ about yourself.
Now, let’s talk about some very good things you should know you are.
I am loved. You need to know that God loves you, and his love is the best. God loves you so much and there’s nothing he can’t do, because he is in charge of everything. He can help you be the best you! It does not matter who does not like you, as long as God loves you, then you should be happy.
I am good. Stop thinking you are bad. Yes, maybe you sometimes do bad things that make people angry with you, but that does not mean you are bad. You are a child of God, and that means you are good. You are good and you are able to do good things.
I am special. You are not like everybody else. You are unique. God made you specially; there is no one else like you in the whole earth. So, don’t wish you are somebody else, just because they have finer clothes or toys. You are special, always remember this! You are just the way God wants you to be- you are good enough, pretty enough, tall enough….
I am blessed. You are blessed because God is for you. You are a child of God; and God owns everything. He can give you all that you need to be the best.
When people hurt you or you feel sad, don’t think that nobody likes you. Do you know what you should do? Remember the four ‘I AMS’ and tell yourself- I am loved, I am good, I am special and I am blessed.
You need to know that people might not always treat you right, but you have to think right about yourself. Think good thoughts about yourself, be good to everyone and God will help you be the best!
Long ago, there lived a little boy named Sammy. He was a good boy. He was good at his studies, obedient to his parents, more intelligent than many other boys in his class and kind to everyone. Grown-ups as well as those junior to Sammy loved him very much. But that aroused jealousy in many other boys who longed to be as loved as Sammy.
Friends are fun! But great friends make life even more fun. Do you wonder how life will be without your friends? It will be so boring not having anyone to play with, talk to, or share secrets with.
