This summer, a number of Nigerian films are being released in cinemas that are just the perfect relaxation films for you and your friends. From great stories to terrific cinematography, we have compiled a list of films we think you should see, and a small review of what we think about them.

Nah, don’t mention. We are awesome like that.

  1. BANANA ISLAND GHOSTS: Okay, we haven’t seen this yet as it is not currently in cinemas. But we can tell you we think it would be awesome. First, it has the amazing Chioma Omeruah aka Chigul who isn’t only a funny comedienne, but also a brilliant actor, judging from her roles in movies like Out of Luck and Remember Me. Here, Chigul is Ijeoma, and she is looking to save her father’s home in Banana Island. Then a ghost of a man who died in a car accident begs God for a chance to comeback to life and not die loveless. These two strangers meet, and must work together to achieve both their goals and fall in love.
Because the story is so unconventional and the picture quality is inviting, we cannot wait to queue at cinemas to get our tickets for its cinema premier on the 4th of August.
  2. ROTI: This gripping story of loss directed by Kunle Afolayan is one you don’t want to miss. It tells of Durotimi, a young boy who dies of a heart illness. His parents, Kabiru and Dianne Shittu are devastated as he was their only son, but just when they begin to heal, they find another boy, Juwon, identical to their son, with different parents and completely living a different life.  Dianne becomes obsessed with the boy as she believes he is her son who has come back to her.
This story deals with the loss of a loved one with brilliant acts Kunle Afolayan and Kate Henshaw.
  3. PICTURE PERFECT: If you love to laugh, then Picture Perfect is your movie. And it isn’t silly comedy.  It is the kind that has a strong plot to it. It is about a fashion designer, Kunmbi, who comes across a Lagos area boy, Jobe, when she is in danger. He saves her life, but becomes a disturbance to her soon enough, and interrupts the course of her life in an unimaginable way. Starring Mary Remmy Njoku, Bisola Aiyeola and Bolanle Ninalowo, Picture perfect is one film you would be glad you spent that N1000 to watch. You would even gladly buy tickets for your friends.
  4. MY WIFE AND I: This supernatural comedy film set to be released on the 25th of August is a story about a couple’s struggle to restore sanity to their matrimonial home. It features award-winning actors, Ramsey Nouah and Omoni Oboli. From the trailer, you can be sure to laugh out loud and jump at the course of events when the couples genders are suddenly switched by an encounter with a counselor.  It is one film we are almost sure will make your day.

So, there. Mark the dates and go enjoy some good family time as we watch and celebrate our homegrown film industry. Be sure to check the ratings so as to know if it is safe to take the children along.

And of course, gemWoman is proud of Nollywood.  We are proud of its journey, and celebrate where it is going.
